The altitude at which different bird species fly is often influenced by their specific needs and characteristics. Smaller birds typically stay closer to the ground as their food sources and nesting places are found there. However, during migration, even small birds can fly at higher altitudes. Medium-sized birds like swallows and swifts fly higher to catch insects while in flight and tend to nest in elevated locations such as high cliff ledges. Owls, being nocturnal hunters, generally fly at lower heights as their prey is primarily found on the ground. On the other hand, larger birds like hawks, falcons, eagles, and vultures soar at great heights due to their size, strength, and exceptional eyesight, which allows them to spot prey on the ground or flying beneath them. They can take advantage of warm air currents and their expansive wingspans to gain elevation without exerting much effort. Additionally, the soaring flight may also be enjoyable for these birds.
