I’m a Kannadiga and I’m a very choosy person when it comes to movies. For me, entertainment is just not enough. A movie should have a good story and a director who can tell it in an intriguing way.

I will be choosing the best movie I have seen in the recent times.

Vikram Vedha

The story is very simple. A criminal helps a policeman in finding the real culprits & also persuading the policeman that there is no clear black and white.

But the way the story was weaved and related to Vikram and Betaal is just marvelous.

Vikram and Betaal (A prince named Vikramaditya and a Devil which tells stories, asks questions and expects right answers) is a well-known folklore in India.

The Devil asks ambiguous questions that test one’s Dharma. But Vikram always gets it right. It tells him several stories and in the very end, Betaal saves Vikram from a grave danger which he had no knowledge about from the beginning. You have to read the story to know it.

Now at the beginning of the movie, the contrast between the two characters are clearly white and black. Because in Vikram’s perspective, he is right and Vedha is wrong.

Halfway through the movie, the character Vikram realizes that he’s not completely right, he has doubts and he’s shown wearing light-grey.

And in the final encounter however, Vikram realizes that he has killed an innocent. Here, he is shown wearing Black. Do you see the transition?

These subtle hints using symbolism, aligning it with an age-old mythology and how Vikram – while investigating – puts the puzzle pieces together to solve the mystery is what makes the movie outstanding.

For me, this is one of the best Tamil movies of all time. Sorry for listing only one.
