If you're traveling by plane and a very obese person sits next to you and you basically can't move anymore, are you allowed to say anything in regards to changing your seat or anything of that sort?

If you find yourself in a situation where you are uncomfortable due to limited space caused by an obese passenger sitting next to you on a plane, it’s best to handle the situation with understanding, empathy, and respect for the other person. Here are some suggestions on how to address the issue:

    1. Speak to the Flight Attendant: If you are genuinely unable to fit comfortably in your seat due to the size of the person next to you, discreetly communicate your concern to a flight attendant. They are experienced in handling such situations and may be able to find a solution, such as reseating you or addressing the issue in a way that respects both passengers’ comfort.
    2. Request a Seat Change: Depending on the availability, you can politely ask a flight attendant if it’s possible to change your seat to a more comfortable one. They may be able to accommodate your request if there are empty seats on the flight.
    3. Maintain Politeness and Sensitivity: When addressing the issue, it’s crucial to remain polite and respectful. Keep in mind that the obese passenger may already be aware of the situation and may also feel uncomfortable. Avoid making derogatory or offensive comments, as it will only escalate the situation and potentially cause distress to both parties involved.
    4. Consider Booking Seat Selection in Advance: Some airlines offer seat selection options during the booking process or for an additional fee. By selecting a seat in advance, you may have more control over your seating arrangement and can choose a seat that suits your preferences.
    5. Bring Items for Comfort: Consider bringing items that can enhance your comfort during the flight, such as neck pillows, seat cushions, or extra layers of clothing that can be used as padding.

It’s important to approach such situations with empathy and understanding, recognizing that people come in all shapes and sizes. Airlines strive to provide a safe and comfortable experience for all passengers, and they may have protocols in place to handle such circumstances. Speaking with the flight attendants or airline staff can help find a resolution that respects everyone’s needs.
