They both have different singing styles, lata is good in singing soft songs like romantic songs or sad songs. Asha is good in singing cabaret songs, club songs etc. Asha herself said in an interview that when she started out she was also influenced by Lata’s singing style. But she didn’t wanted to be singing like lata, and rightfully so because there won’t be any point in singing like lata when lata is already there. So, asha developed her on singing style after listening to western singers and she moulded her voice accordingly and perhaps RD burman helped her in that, asha became popular only after Rd burman came to the scene. Before that she was merely singing in the shadow of lata, and was way behind the likes of shamshad begum, geeta dutt.

When it comes to gazal, both singers fall behind someone like noor jehan. They are not very good in singing gazals.
