“Jazz” is a big, big term. Lots of stuff, you know “My Way,” “There Will Never be Another You,” etc has pop appeal even though it’s very complicated compared to modern pop.

I think why people say that, is because jazz is complicated. The rhythms are complicated, the chords are complicated, the melodies are complicated. The pieces are long and often improvised by expert musicians who are pushing the envelope of what “sounds good.”

So someone who has an undeveloped palate or isn’t a musician, it can go over their heads. They are used to ketchup and soda pop, and now this is blue cheese and red wine. They don’t get it, yuck.
