Ted Williams used to pay the Red Sox bat boys a few dollars to answer his fan mail and sign autographs for him, so by his own admission, MANY Ted Williams autographs are fraudulent.
Most big celebrities get far more fan mail than they can answer themselves, and most don’t have time to make personal replies or sign real autographs for everyone who requests them. They often have assistants who answer the mail and even forge autographs.
When I was a kid, I used to write to my favorite athletes for autographs all the time, and I was thrilled to get a reply. But were they all legit? Probably not. Many, maybe most, were probably signed by someone else.
