Typically, I recommend older rescue dogs for first-time dog owners. However, considering your situation where there may be prejudice against cats from an older dog, it would be best to either get a puppy or an adult dog known to be friendly with cats.

Puppies come with the advantage of including potty training and obedience training. However, keep in mind that you will need to invest in a trainer, attend puppy training courses, and focus on their socialization with other dogs and your cats.

Introducing a puppy into your home where you already have cats will establish the dog as the “odd one out.” Your cats will quickly teach the boundaries and how to get along with cats, which is a valuable lesson that no trainer can replicate.

I personally have two large dogs and a cat. My cat, Sam, was born in this house, and I already had Luna, my black lab mix. Luna has always been gentle and sweet with smaller animals. When Sam was two years old, I rescued Daisy, my pit bull mix, who had a difficult past. Despite that, Sam was accustomed to being part of the household and knew how to establish her boundaries. She swiftly trained Daisy on how to be a good companion to a cat.

I understand the need for protection, as I am a single person living alone. However, with my pack, I no longer feel alone, and they all coexist harmoniously.
