I had a rather memorable encounter with the European Adder (Vipera berus), which happens to be the UK’s only venomous snake. This incident occurred approximately 20 years ago during a fact-finding expedition with a group of herpetologists who were specifically studying the three native reptile species in the UK. While innocently clearing some vegetation aside, I unintentionally disturbed an Adder and received a bite on my hand.
Although the bite of the European Adder is seldom fatal, it can be quite painful and may lead to symptoms such as vomiting, chills, and occasional convulsions in the unfortunate recipient. In my case, I experienced pain at the bite site and endured an intense headache, similar to a migraine, which persisted for three days. Additionally, I felt nauseous for about a day.
Thankfully, apart from these discomforts, I suffered no further adverse effects. The encounter provided me with an “interesting” firsthand experience of being bitten by a venomous creature, offering valuable insights that I could share with others through lectures and discussions.
