Contrary to popular belief, Great White Sharks are not inherently dangerous to humans, except in specific cases of mistaken identity. Humans are not part of the natural prey for Great Whites, and once they recognize a human, they typically do not consider them as a potential meal and will pass them by in search of their preferred prey, which is rich in blubber. Great White Sharks require a diet high in fatty blubber to gain buoyancy, which helps them conserve energy during long periods between meals. Maintaining buoyancy is crucial for their ability to swim and hunt effectively. If a Great White Shark loses buoyancy for an extended period, it can lead to a decline in energy levels and a potential threat to the shark’s survival.

The primary sources of food for Great White Sharks include various species of seals and sea lions, as well as dead whales, which are considered a particularly favored meal. Observations have shown Great Whites engaging in feeding frenzies around floating whale carcasses, with each shark tearing off significant chunks of blubber and flesh using lateral head shakes.

Great White Sharks primarily rely on their visual hunting abilities, despite having a keen sense of smell and the ability to detect electrical fields and disturbances in the water using Ampullae of Lorenzini, a sensory system of jelly-filled pits. They often cruise along the ocean floor, utilizing their dark grey skin coloration to blend in with the dark surroundings, rendering them nearly invisible to seals swimming above. When a Great White Shark spots the silhouette of a seal or sea lion from below, it swiftly calculates its trajectory and propels itself upward at high speed to attack. The objective is to deliver a powerful bite that incapacitates the prey, causing it to bleed out while the shark remains at a safe distance, avoiding potential harm from the prey’s teeth and claws. Once the seal or sea lion is deceased, the shark moves in to consume its blubbery meal. The breathtaking breach photos and videos often captured show Great White Sharks propelling themselves out of the water during these high-speed attacks.

Instances of human encounters with Great White Sharks leading to tragedy usually occur when certain factors, such as using a boogie board or surfboard or wearing a wetsuit, make humans resemble seals or turtles on the water’s surface. Mistaking humans for blubbery prey, the sharks may initiate an attack. While they typically realize their mistake after the initial bite and refrain from further aggression, the damage caused by the powerful jaws of a Great White Shark can be devastating to human bodies. Furthermore, since sharks lack hands, they often explore objects of curiosity with their mouths. Considering the formidable appearance of a Great White Shark’s open jaws, even gentle exploratory bites can inflict severe damage on humans. In summary, when it comes to shark species, Great White Sharks generally do not exhibit a strong interest in consuming humans. They tend to avoid such encounters due to the reasons mentioned earlier, and cases of attacks on humans are typically a result of mistaken identity.

On the other hand, certain shark species like the Bull Shark have been known to attack humans in shallow waters, not as a case of mistaken identity, but rather due to their opportunistic feeding behavior. When hungry, these sharks may attempt to consume anything they encounter, leading to multiple bites. Tiger sharks and Open Ocean White Tips have also been observed near shipwrecks and plane crashes, where they scavenge on vulnerable individuals like wounded sailors or dazed airplane passengers. While it is not accurate to label any shark as a mindless killing machine, these species mentioned are ones to exercise caution around, and it is generally advisable to avoid swimming with them, especially in circumstances where control over the environment is limited.

To minimize the risk of unwanted and tragic encounters with sharks, it is important to follow basic precautionary measures. These include avoiding swimming near river mouths, at dawn or dusk, or near areas with fishing activity. Additionally, it is advisable to avoid splashing or swimming erratically and never swim alone. Gaining knowledge about the specific shark species that frequent the waters and seeking guidance from local surfers, fishermen, and experienced individuals familiar with the area can provide valuable insights on where it is safe to swim and what precautions to take. By adhering to these guidelines, one can enjoy the water while minimizing the chances of an unwanted incident.
