Let’s examine the characteristics of the two contenders. On average, adult male Nile crocodiles measure around 13.5 ft/4.1 m in length and weigh approximately 610 lb/281 kg. In comparison, male saltwater crocodiles are typically two feet longer on average and about 40% heavier, weighing over half a ton. Based on average sizes, the saltwater crocodile clearly has the advantage. While Nile crocodiles can reach lengths of about 16 feet, it is not uncommon to find saltwater crocodiles exceeding 18 feet in recovered populations.

In terms of physical attributes, if we assume males of both species are similar in size and weight, their snout structure and bite force are relatively comparable. When it comes to hunting prowess, Nile crocodiles demonstrate impressive skills, benefiting from Africa’s diverse range of large prey. However, I still believe the saltwater crocodile has the edge. They are naturally more territorial than Nile crocodiles and are more likely to be the aggressor in encounters. In terms of interactions with other crocodiles, I recall instances of saltwater crocodiles preying on mugger and Australian freshwater crocodiles. Although the ranges of Nile crocodiles may overlap with other crocodile species, they generally occupy different habitats and are not known to hunt other crocodiles. Therefore, saltwater crocodiles have an advantage in terms of intra-species aggression, intra-guild predation, and size, making them the more likely victor in most encounters.
