Movies like Student of Year and Housefull are pure business ventures for Bollywood ( if you consider them as movies in the first place). Without much effort you can earn pretty well. Secondly historical subjects are never going to be unbiased, even in the least, even if you try your best to be politically correct. Everyone is going to glorify their own community. This happens even in Hollywood. Movies based on world war 2 often depict American or British side. When the movie Dunkirk was released many French people objected since they believed Nolan glorified the British and downplayed the importance of French in their fight against Hitler.
But in India they attract huge controversies and certainly a subject like Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is going to create huge uproars. So there is a caste, religious, political angle in it. In short it’s very risky. Even a mainstream director can get slapped and manhandled, for a movie which clearly glorified the side of the manhandlers. So imagine this situation. If you think why Bahubali worked, well it was pure fiction and has nothing to do with history. Fictional characters don’t attract biases like historical figures. A historical figure like Maharaj will have at least 10 different communities and many political groups that own his legacy. Sometimes their views on him are contradictory never the less they believe in their version. So while making a movie you cant incorporate every single one of their views and often this creates a situation where either one of them will always think that Maharaj’s portrayal isn’t authentic. So that’s the problem.
But I am not against anybody making these movies, if they want to. If Bollywood is fine with the repercussions they should make it. Their choice, their money. If they think that the movie will recover their investments they will. It’s all about investments and returns.
