Partially for the same reason they appeal to Non-Resident Indian (NRI) audiences and to non-Indian Western audiences, by both having substantial parts shot in the West (Europe for Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Toronto — er, “New York City” for Kuch Kuch Hota Hai). Both movies are also highly aspirational, as even Amrish Puri’s London Convenience Store Owner is shown to be well-off enough to own a home in London and a larger one in the Punjab!
