When faced with a growling dog, knowing how to react can help protect you from a potentially dangerous situation. This is based on understanding dog psychology, and I’ve shared this knowledge with my colleagues.
Once you recognize that the dog may become difficult, follow these steps:
Immediately break off eye contact, as dogs perceive prolonged eye contact as a threat.
Turn your body to the side, presenting a less confrontational posture.
Open your hands with palms visible, indicating non-aggression.
In a hissing sound, express your assertiveness. Practicing this response can help you react appropriately when needed.
This is my own dog, and he’s more likely to shower you with affectionate licks.
If the dog still proceeds to attack, unfortunately, you may have to defend yourself and others. In such a situation, it might be necessary to firmly grab the dog’s front legs and pull them apart. However, please remember to use this method only as a last resort for self-defense.
I have a deep love for dogs, but I also understand that when things go wrong, people and other animals can get injured or even killed.
Fortunately, it’s unlikely that you will ever have to confront a dog attack against you or your family. However, it’s important to be aware of these techniques.
If you own an aggressive dog, it is crucial to seek professional help and consider training classes. Otherwise, managing the situation could become increasingly challenging.
Wishing you a safe and harmonious relationship with dogs
