The major factors that increase the risk of MI (myocardial infarction or heart attack) include hypertension, obesity, diabetes, smoking, inadequate physical activity, and a family history of early onset cardiovascular disease.
To reduce the risk of MI, it’s crucial to focus on modifiable factors. This can include lowering blood pressure through exercise, medication, and diet, as well as reducing the risk or severity of diabetes and obesity through lifestyle changes. Quitting smoking is also important.
There are certain diets, such as the DASH and Mediterranean diets, that can be helpful in reducing blood pressure and fatness. In addition, both aerobic and isometric hand grip exercises have been shown to lower blood pressure, while regular exercise can improve blood sugar levels and insulin sensitivity.
Breaking up long periods of sitting with brief bouts of activity every hour can also help reduce the risk of MI.
For more information, it’s recommended to consult a qualified exercise professional like a kinesiologist. If you’re at high risk for MI, speak to your doctor for a referral.
