So many things…

1. Acting is all plasticky except perhaps shades of potential in Varun Dhawan & of course the ever dependable, Rishi Kapoor
2. Script is a joke. Scenes like sprinkling of urine in sports teacher’s house, abrupt start of friendship between Varun’s & Sidharth’s characters, uncooked love story between Alia & Sidharth- are all jarring
3. The desperate attempt by Karan Johar to have a gay character in his movies & defeating the very purpose of inclusion, by making him a caricature is disappointing. More such characters can be decent & moving like Vivek Mushran’s in Veere di Wedding
4. Finally, even a popcorn entertainer like SOTY could have worked if it had a truly charming actor, just as SRK was in KKHH(directed by the same maker years back). Alas, not to be…

But not all’s bad in SOTY, as it had the wonderful Rishi Kapoor and some memorable songs…and yes it gave Hindi movies a powerful performer like Alia Bhatt who got better with each subsequent movie!
