Cheetahs pose no threat to humans and do not prey on people. They only target small ungulates and will defend their young if necessary. An adult cheetah without offspring will simply choose to flee. While they are capable of inflicting serious injuries if cornered, there has never been a documented case of a cheetah killing a person throughout written history.
Attempting to intrude upon a wild cheetah’s territory would be more futile than perilous. They prefer to avoid human presence and can easily outpace us with their remarkable speed. No human or land animal can match the cheetah’s swiftness.
If it were ethically viable for them to live as pets, cheetahs would make reasonably good companions. In ancient times, royalty kept them as impressive hunting cats. A solitary cheetah could chase down and capture small game effortlessly. In captivity, they exhibit affection towards their human caregivers, much like domestic cats. They purr, rub their heads against people, and enjoy cuddling. However, one challenge for us is that their rough tongues, when licking us, can cause bruising and even slight abrasions on our exposed skin.
The relationship, however, is far less ideal for cheetahs. Their optimal health relies on their ability to sprint freely like the wind, an opportunity that few people can consistently provide. Above all, our responsibility lies in safeguarding their natural habitat, preventing poaching, and ensuring these magnificent felines can survive in their native environments.
