During my time as a Prison Medic, I had the opportunity to engage in conversations with inmates during long ambulance rides across Texas. These rides involved transferring severely ill inmates from their prison units to the main hospital in Galveston. The topic of dogs frequently arose, and without exception, the inmates unanimously agreed on one thing: the presence of a barking dog, regardless of its size, was the most significant deterrent for them when considering breaking into a house.

It wasn’t that these individuals feared small dogs per se, but rather they were concerned about the attention that barking would attract. The prospect of alerting the homeowner, who might be armed, terrified them. Hence, based on their standards, a Chihuahua would be an excellent choice.

As a dog trainer, I can confidently say that anyone contemplating a “Protection Dog” and not seeking professional sourcing as a puppy, proper training, and an intensive course for owner and dog pairing (despite the significant expenses involved) lacks a true understanding of what they are talking about. They also fail to comprehend the ongoing responsibilities of handling, training, and the civil liability associated with bringing a dog capable of fulfilling the “Protection” role into their home.

Considering the aforementioned points, a spirited, curious, and vocal little Chihuahua proves to be a perfect choice. Moreover, they are more cost-effective when acquired in larger numbers.
