As long as the lofts adhere to the local Council Ordinances, keeping pigeons is indeed legal.
However, it’s worth noting that in residential areas, it is not uncommon for neighbors to express objections to the presence of pigeons. This means that obtaining Council approval for pigeon-keeping can pose challenges, unless the loft is constructed in compliance with the specific requirements set by the Council and diligently maintained as such.
No, it is genetically impossible for pigeons and doves to hybridize because they have different numbers of chromosomes. Pigeons have 80 chromosomes (40 pairs), while doves have 76-78 chromosomes (38-39 pairs) depending on the species. During the reproductive process, each parent needs to contribute half of their genetic material, which includes one of each pair of chromosomes. This occurs when the chromosomes align equally during mitosis. However, since pigeons and doves have different numbers of chromosomes, they cannot align properly for successful hybridization. In essence, it is genetically impossible for them to hybridize, at least theoretically.
If you’re interested in exploring this topic further, you can refer to an old article titled “Karyotype Studies in Birds. 2: A Comparative Study of Chromosomes in the Columbidae, Caryologia” by Sajiro Makino, Tatsuo Udagawa, and Yoshimaro Yamashina (1956). It discusses the chromosome numbers of various dove and pigeon species and also touches on which species can potentially hybridize.
