One day, my father stumbled upon a lion cub near its deceased mother and decided to bring it back to our ranch. We took on the responsibility of training the cub, treating it more like a dog than a wild animal. Using a short lead attached to the collar of a well-trained and nervous dog, we taught the lion to respond to specific calls or whistles. Surprisingly, the lion picked up on these cues quickly and learned which way to go based on our instructions.
What amazed us even more was the lion’s impact on our cattle. Typically, herding dogs encounter resistance and hesitation from the cattle, making it challenging to gather them. However, when the lion’s scent reached the cows’ nostrils, they immediately flocked to the middle of the herd. It was as if they instinctively recognized the presence of the lion and sought safety in numbers.
This unique bond between the lion and our cattle demonstrated the lion’s remarkable ability to command respect and evoke a sense of authority. It was an unexpected but fascinating experience to witness the lion’s influence over the behavior of these typically independent-minded animals.
