Indeed, animals can communicate effectively with one another, but it requires them to have previous experiences and interactions. A prime example is the relationship between livestock guardian dogs and the animals they protect, such as goats.

These dogs are raised in a manner that fosters a strong bond with their assigned charges, in this case, goats. Through this bond, they develop an understanding of the goats’ body language. For instance, when a goat lowers its head and presents the top with its horns, it is a clear sign of a threat. In response, the dog may growl, signaling its awareness of the situation. The goats have already learned that the growl from the dogs is typically followed by a display of teeth, further reinforcing the communication between them.

Moreover, my dogs have also developed an understanding of horses, as they share the pasture with the goats. It is essential for our horses to respect the goats and not pose any threat or chase them. They are trained to approach the goats calmly, with a lowered head and at a slow pace. Should a horse forget these rules, the dogs act as reminders by sitting up in a visible spot, effectively signaling to the horse to slow down and maintain proper behavior.

A remarkable incident occurred when we introduced a new horse into the pasture. As soon as the horse entered the area, the dogs immediately began correcting her behavior, barking and expressing their disapproval. It turned out that this particular horse had a history of chasing goats, and somehow, the dogs were aware of it. Their instinct and expertise in their role allowed them to detect the potential threat and respond accordingly.

The precise way in which the dogs knew about the horse’s behavior remains a mystery to me. However, their exceptional skills and understanding of their responsibilities demonstrate their competence in fulfilling their duties as guardians. They possess an innate ability to interpret and communicate effectively within their environment, making them highly proficient in what they do.
