Today, while exploring a new snorkeling spot on the Big Island of Hawaii, I found myself walking through the parking lot of a closed National Historic Park. Due to the government shutdown, the gate was shut, forcing a tourist bus to back down the narrow and winding road for about a quarter of a mile to unload its passengers. I couldn’t help but admire the skill of the bus driver in maneuvering the vehicle in such a challenging situation.
As I made my way through the deserted parking lot, I unexpectedly stumbled upon a group of goats. With this encounter, I jokingly added “professional goat herder” to my resume, considering myself a goat whisperer of sorts. I took pride in my ability to mimic the distinct bleating sound of a goat (ma-a-a-aaa), which differs from a sheep’s ba-a-a.
Despite witnessing two billy goats engaged in a head-butting competition, I decided to approach the goats in a friendly manner. I moved closer and greeted them with a hearty “Ma-a-a-a-a!” They looked up, somewhat suspicious. Undeterred, I attempted another goat-like bleat, and this time, one of the amorous billy goats seemed convinced that one of his does was attempting to escape. He started chasing after me with determined resolve.
Now, having recently recovered from a nasty deer bite and eager to enjoy my first swim in nearly two weeks, I had no intention of getting involved in another animal-related incident. With the billy goat hot on my heels, I quickened my pace, but he persisted in his pursuit. In a burst of adrenaline, I sprinted to the safety of the park building’s porch.
I have no doubt that one of the tourists on the bus managed to capture the amusing spectacle of a woman being chased by a goat…
So, in response to the question, yes, we can communicate with animals, but we must exercise caution and be fully aware of the messages we convey.
