Nests primarily serve as cradles rather than long-term houses for birds. In the majority of bird species, nests are exclusively utilized for raising their chicks. Whether a nest is reused for subsequent broods depends on the particular species. However, reusing nests carries certain risks, such as potential infestation by mites or other issues.

In a few species, but not many, young birds that have fledged may return to the nest to sleep for a few days. Some might even come back to the nest to be fed, although most species of birds provide food to their fledglings wherever they happen to be. The phrase “leave the nest” doesn’t necessarily imply independence for most birds. In fact, in many species, parents continue to provide care for their young for days, weeks, or even months after fledging. Leaving the nest is more akin to a baby taking its first steps than a grown child moving into their own apartment.

While there are a few species where adults may sleep in the nest after the rearing of chicks is complete, and some birds construct nests specifically for sleep or rest, these nests usually have a slightly different structure than those used for breeding purposes.
