Studies have provided insights into how cats produce the purring sound, but the nature of purring being voluntary or involuntary remains a matter of opinion.

The purr sound is generated by cats through intermittent signaling of their laryngeal and diaphragmatic muscles. It occurs during both inhalation and exhalation, following a consistent pattern and frequency ranging from 25 to 150 Hertz. Researchers have discovered that sound frequencies within this range can potentially enhance bone density and facilitate healing processes.

This could possibly explain why cats are generally less susceptible to bone disorders compared to other animals like dogs. Some theories propose that purring may serve as a self-healing mechanism, at least to some extent.

Interestingly, even newborn kittens, merely a day or two old, are capable of producing purring sounds. It serves as a means of communication and comfort between the kittens and their mother.

Moreover, there are theories suggesting that the release of endorphins contributes to purring. Endorphins, known to be released in both painful and pleasurable situations, could account for why cats purr when they’re happy as well as when they’re experiencing stress or injuries.
