Unlike snakes, alligators, turtles, and crocodiles, birds have a different nesting behavior. While reptiles lay eggs in nests and cover them with dirt or sand for protection, birds’ nests are typically open and not covered.

Birds rely on the warmth of the incubating parent, the ambient temperature, and the sun’s heat to hatch their eggs. They do not bury their eggs or cover them with materials like dirt or sand. Instead, the eggs are laid within the nest structure, which provides a safe and secure location for incubation. Once the eggs hatch, the parent bird may assist the hatchlings by removing eggshell fragments or creating a path for them to escape the nest. This is usually done by the parent carefully pecking or removing any obstacles that might impede the hatchlings’ exit from the nest.

Birds’ nesting behavior and the design of their nests differ from reptiles, as they have evolved distinct strategies to protect and incubate their eggs. The open nature of bird nests allows for efficient parental care, monitoring, and feeding of the hatchlings until they are ready to leave the nest.
