    Atoms do have outer shells, but they are very small and difficult to see with a traditional light microscope. Electron microscopes use a beam of electrons to create images of objects that are too small to be seen with a light microscope.     There are two main types of electron microscopes: transmission electron microscopes (TEMs) and scanning electron microscopes (SEMs).
