Thank you for asking this important question, especially for new guinea pig owners who are looking to build trust with their pets.

Knowing when your guinea pig trusts you enough to be picked up can be observed through their behavior. When they feel comfortable and trust you, they will typically exhibit the following signs:

They do not run away: Guinea pigs that trust you will not try to escape or avoid your approach when you reach out to pick them up. They may stay in place or even move closer to you.

No kicking or biting: Trusting guinea pigs are less likely to display defensive behaviors such as kicking or biting when you try to handle them. They may remain calm and relaxed in your presence.

Willingness to approach you: Guinea pigs that trust you may voluntarily approach you, either by walking or running towards you. This behavior shows their willingness to interact and be picked up.

It’s important to remember that building trust takes time and patience. Each guinea pig is unique, and some may take longer than others to feel completely comfortable with being handled. By consistently providing gentle and positive interactions, offering treats, and creating a calm environment, you can foster a trusting relationship with your guinea pig over time
