Well, most of the guys I know don’t practice that much, they’re gigging all the time, with different leaders. So…in a sense, that’s practice. I’m reading the book about Monk; apparently, he would practice quite a bit, sometimes with the other guys in his band, but without charts – guys like Charlie Rouse and Coltrane were expected to listen to the head as played by Monk and get it without the chart.
