In Gir National Park, Gujarat, India, and certain areas of Southern Gujarat, both Asiatic lions and striped hyenas coexist, although direct confrontations between them are rare due to the low population of striped hyenas, possibly influenced by their negative reputation. When occasional confrontations do occur, typically while scavenging a carcass, the striped hyenas, being smaller and cautious of lions, either flee upon sighting or detecting lions, or they are chased away by the lions.

Unlike in Africa, Asiatic lions in this region do not actively seek out hyena dens to kill hyenas. This is because striped hyenas are smaller and more timid compared to the spotted hyenas of Africa. Additionally, striped hyenas live in small groups, posing minimal threat to lions. However, an irritated or protective lion or lioness may engage in aggression towards a hyena that persistently approaches them or their cubs.
