Avoid picking guinea pigs up directly overhead as it can scare them. Instead, try offering them a special treat at a consistent time each day to create a positive association. It’s amusing how my cavies used to squeal excitedly when they heard the theme from the Guiding Light on TV because they knew they were about to get lettuce when my then-husband came home. They even did it on weekends!

When picking them up, be gentle and support their hindquarters. You can also lie down and let them walk on you, creating a safe and comfortable space for them to explore. Providing a secure area on the floor where they can wander freely and offering occasional treats can also be enjoyable for them.

Guinea pigs can be very affectionate. If possible, consider getting a same-sex companion for them as it can enhance their social well-being. If you’re unsure about the gender of your guinea pig, have a veterinarian determine it for you to prevent unplanned litters. It’s best to avoid breeding them without proper planning, as finding homes for the babies can be challenging and overwhelming.
