The Bald Eagle exhibits migratory behavior in certain regions. By referring to the Bald Eagle Range Map provided by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s All About Birds website, one can observe that Canadian eagles and those in areas like Minnesota and Wisconsin undertake southward migrations. This migration occurs when lakes and rivers freeze over, prompting the birds to seek more favorable conditions.
Upon examining the map, it becomes apparent that eagles residing along the coasts and the Southern Mississippi River are year-round residents. However, northern birds tend to migrate towards the coasts during the designated season, a trend observed not only in Bald Eagles but also in Ducks and Geese.
It is essential to recognize that migration patterns are evolving. Bald Eagles faced near extinction in the lower 48 states, and their recovery has been largely facilitated by human efforts. Unlike endeavors to restore the Whooping Crane population, the restoration of Bald Eagles has been immensely successful.
Bald eagles have faced habitat challenges in certain parts of the United States, but their population thrives in Canada.
Currently, there is a significant number of eagles wintering in Delta, a semi-rural municipality located just south of Vancouver and north of the border. The Christmas bird count in this area tallied 785 individuals, and additional eagles arrived in January, bringing the peak count to over a thousand. During spring, they will migrate up the coast to their respective nesting sites, but for now, they can be observed in abundance.
The eagle population in Delta is particularly noteworthy in the context of British Columbia. In the annual Christmas Bird Count coordinated by Jude Grass in Ladner, 785 bald eagles were recorded on December 27. This count, covering various areas such as the landfill, the 70-hectare Deas Island Regional Park, and the Burns Bog Ecological Conservancy Area spanning almost 2,500 hectares, represents the highest count in a decade. These majestic birds also put on captivating displays at locations like the Turf Farm (Fraser Valley Turf Farms), and travelers driving along Highway 99 from Seattle to Vancouver are likely to spot a dozen eagles or more without much effort.
