Birds have a unique reproductive system that limits them to laying one egg per day. This is due to their adaptation for flight, as carrying multiple eggs simultaneously would hinder their ability to fly. Unlike some other animals like snakes, turtles, and crocodilians, birds did not evolve to be live-bearing or lay multiple eggs at once.

In a study conducted on Northern Mockingbirds, it was observed that their breeding cycle followed a consistent pattern. It took approximately 12 days for them to construct a nest, followed by laying one egg per day for three days (occasionally four). Afterward, they spent around 12 days incubating the eggs until they hatched. Finally, there was a final 12-day period before the young birds fledged and the parents abandoned the nest. This 12-12-12 timeline was fairly predictable, with minimal variation.

Most of the bird species examined in the study went through this breeding cycle three times per season, typically starting in March and finishing in August or, occasionally, September. Some pairs even managed to have four clutches. Unfortunately, about half of the breeding pairs experienced challenges such as predation, adverse weather conditions (such as prolonged cold and heavy rain), accidents (like disturbances caused by groundskeepers pruning nearby shrubbery), or the death of one of the parents due to predators or vehicles. In such cases, the surviving parent would abandon the nest, leading to the unfortunate demise of the eggs or chicks.
