While I cannot provide a definitive answer on the intelligence of goldfish, I can share a personal anecdote. In my household, there are three individuals: myself, my husband, and our child. Interestingly, our goldfish seem to exhibit distinct behaviors in response to each of us.

My husband, who pays no attention to the fish, goes unnoticed by them. They appear to completely ignore his presence.

When our child enters the room, however, the goldfish display a noticeable reaction. They retreat to the back of their tanks, sometimes darting around anxiously, regardless of her behavior. It seems that her mere presence unsettles them. The goldfish recognize and remember her.

As for myself, the fish exhibit a different response. Upon my arrival, they wiggle back and forth at the front of the tank, moving closer to the surface. They seem to recognize me as their feeder and display excitement in anticipation of being fed.

These observations make it evident to me that the goldfish recognize us and are aware of their daily routines and environment. This realization has motivated me to ensure they have the best possible quality of life, considering their potential lifespan of several decades. I strive to provide them with varied food options and occasionally make changes to the environment of their tanks. For instance, this year, I plan to move them to an outdoor patio pond during the summer to offer them a change of scenery.

While the extent of their cognitive abilities remains uncertain, I am committed to providing the goldfish with the care and enrichment they deserve.
