I witnessed two remarkable incidents that highlight the strength of bears:
In one instance, I observed a bear in Wasilla, AK effortlessly flipping over a full garbage dumpster behind an apartment complex. With just two paws on the edge, the bear managed to walk the entire dumpster onto its side. Keep in mind that a fully loaded 20-yard dumpster weighs approximately 6,000 pounds.
On another occasion, outside a bar near Fairbanks, I saw a bear push an F150 truck aside to reach a pizza box that was underneath it. As you might have guessed, an F150 truck also weighs around 6,000 pounds.
Now, let me provide some context. I am a 46-year-old man, standing at 6 feet tall and weighing 220 pounds. While I consider myself reasonably fit, capable of deadlifting 315 pounds for two repetitions and leg pressing around 690 pounds for multiple sets, I would be hard-pressed to flip over an object weighing 600 pounds. In all honesty, it’s doubtful that I could achieve such a feat. I’m granting myself the benefit of the doubt here for simplicity’s sake.
Based on this rough and unscientific assessment, it becomes evident that a brown bear is at least ten times stronger than an average man. Their incredible strength is truly awe-inspiring.
