It is no secret that Rajamouli looked towards Mahabharat for the inspiration of the characters. These characters are deeply rooted in the Indian history and a majority of the Indians can relate to them.
On the other hand, the characters of ToH were a ripoff of all the famous characters in the history of movies. May it be Aamir’s version of Jack Sparrow or Amitabh’s version of Kattappa or simply, Katrina’s version of every other dancer role she does. These became a little too relatable to the audience.
Baahubali was pretty original. The artwork and sets took months to make. The CGI took years. They made up a bloody new language for the movie. They were determined to do something new and authentic.
ToH failed in this department. Although the sets were really neat, the graphics look like a cheap rip-off of a teenager’s video game. There wasn’t much research done either. Two Brits, for instance, converse in Hindi in this movie.
Baahubali promotions were taken to a next level. The makers of this movie spent their time with the crowd. They tied hands with Dharma Productions for the Hindi version and Studio Green for the Tamil version. They are one of the biggest players in their zones. They broke the Guinness World record for the largest poster. And Baahubali 2 was definitely benefited by a single question towards the end of the movie.
ToH was rather simple. They used old tricks like Koffee with Karan and other interviews. They lied on star power to drag the audience to the theatres which misfired badly.
The lead of Baahubali, Prabhas, gave up 5 years of his blossoming career to ensure he stayed in character. Prabhas and Rana, both, gained weight and spent hours in the gym to get their look right. They learned various forms of arts. The actresses learned sword-fighting and archery. The cameraman Senthil gave up his grand launch in Bollywood only for Baahubali. The producers pumped enough money into this movie even though they knew how risky that would be. All of them were driven by only one word, passion.
ToH looks more like an attempt to mint money even with a weak storyline, just like Dhoom 3 did.
Baahubali’s music and the background score undoubtedly took it to the next level. The background score would give you goosebumps. There is a clear echo of Indian rustic tunes in this music. Those trumpets, the huge drums and all made the music apt for a setting like Baahubali. Thanks to M.M.Keeravani.
This man deserves most of the credit for the success of Baahubali. He had the passion to do something new and dream big. He was determined to introduce something new to the Indian audience. To connect with the lead characters, he himself didn’t shave for months. He rode the horses and he himself helped others in the sets. Look at the condition of his clothes in the below pic. Does he look like India’s highest paid director?
He enacted almost every sequence from the movie to explain it to the actors.
