I adopted a dog now regret it. The dog misbehaves constantly and drives me absolutely nuts. My fiancé refuses to let me rehome him and says it’s either me or the dog. What should I do?

As an animal lover, I understand the importance of finding the right home for a dog, rather than just a forever home. It’s crucial to ensure that the dog is in a suitable environment where they can thrive and be happy.

If you haven’t hired a professional trainer, I recommend considering this as a first step. Professional training can make a significant difference in addressing behavioral issues. It’s important to select a reputable trainer by reading reviews or seeking referrals from others.

Take into account the age of the dog. If they are still young, certain behaviors may naturally diminish over time as they mature.

Consider whether the dog is receiving sufficient attention and exercise. Providing ample mental and physical stimulation, such as regular walks and engaging toys, can make a big difference. If you lack the time or physical condition, you may consider hiring someone to assist with exercise needs.

Establishing a consistent routine is vital for dogs. They thrive on predictability, and deviations from their routine can cause anxiety. While you don’t have to be overly strict, maintaining a sense of normalcy as much as possible is beneficial.

If the dog is left alone for extended periods, their anxiety may increase, leading to undesirable behavior. This could include increased chewing or accidents. Ensuring they have appropriate company or arranging for dog-sitting services can help alleviate this.

If the living environment is noisy, such as in an apartment building, playing soft background music can help muffle external sounds and create a calmer atmosphere.

Consider exploring calming products for dogs, as there are various options available. Pet supply stores like Petsmart or Chewy can provide a range of choices.

Observe the dog’s behavior around their food. If they display disinterest or only eat when hungry, they may not enjoy their current food. Switching to a different brand or type of food may improve their behavior.

Spaying or neutering the dog can have a significant impact on their behavior. If they haven’t been spayed or neutered yet, it is advisable to do so promptly.

If you have exhausted these options and the dog’s behavior persists, consult with a veterinarian regarding possible medication that may help alleviate their anxiety.

It’s important to reflect on whether you genuinely enjoy having a dog as a full-time companion. If you find that the dog’s presence is wearing on your nerves, even under the best circumstances, it may be worth considering if another home could provide a better match. Your fiancé, who seems more attached to the dog, may be better suited to provide the necessary care and patience. This could be an opportunity for both of you to reassess the situation. Additionally, it’s important to consider the potential challenges of having a newborn baby if a dog’s imperfections are causing significant stress.

If your fiancé is issuing an ultimatum, prioritizing the dog over your relationship, it may be a situation that requires careful reconsideration from all parties involved. It seems your fiancé may be more attached to the dog than to you, and it might be worth exploring if you can find a partner who shares your feelings toward dogs.

Remember, finding the right home for a dog is crucial for their well-being, and honest self-reflection and open communication are key in making the best decision for all parties involved.
