Cows are categorized as bovines due to their membership in the evolutionary group known as Bovinae. This group includes not only domestic cattle (Bos taurus), but also other animals like water buffalo, yak, and bison. Bovinae is a subfamily within the larger family Bovidae, which encompasses diverse species such as gazelle, antelope, sheep, and goats.
Therefore, cows can be classified as both bovines and bovids.
On the other hand, walruses (Odobenus rosmarus) belong to the family Odobenidae and the subfamily Odobeninae. They are the sole living species within this family. Consequently, walruses are referred to as odobenines and are also part of the odobenid group.
