Space is not a perfect vacuum, and there is a very small amount of matter and energy present. This matter and energy is enough to exert a gravitational force on objects, including asteroids.
Asteroids are small, rocky bodies that orbit the Sun. They are often found in the asteroid belt, which is located between Mars and Jupiter. Asteroids can be very large, up to hundreds of kilometers in diameter, or they can be very small, just a few meters across.
When an asteroid is in orbit around the Sun, it is constantly falling towards the Sun, but it is also moving sideways at a very high speed. This sideways motion is called “orbital velocity.” The combination of orbital velocity and the Sun’s gravity keeps the asteroid in orbit.
However, if an asteroid’s orbit is disturbed, it can fall out of orbit and crash into a planet or another asteroid. This can happen if the asteroid is hit by another asteroid, if it is pulled out of orbit by the gravity of a planet, or if it gets too close to the Sun and is pulled in by its gravity.
When an asteroid falls into a planet’s atmosphere, it can cause a meteor shower. A meteor shower is a large number of meteors that appear to fall from the sky at the same time. Meteors are pieces of rock or metal that enter the Earth’s atmosphere and burn up due to the friction of the atmosphere.
If an asteroid is large enough, it can survive its fall through the atmosphere and hit the Earth’s surface. When an asteroid hits the Earth’s surface, it is called an impact. Impacts can cause a lot of damage, and they can even cause extinctions.
The Chicxulub impact, which is thought to have caused the extinction of the dinosaurs, was caused by an asteroid that was about 10 kilometers in diameter. The asteroid hit the Earth’s surface in what is now Mexico, and it caused a massive explosion that released a huge amount of energy. The explosion caused a global dust cloud that blocked out the Sun, which led to a climate change that wiped out the dinosaurs and many other species.
