Donkeys exhibit strong territorial behavior and can be highly aggressive when trained and employed as livestock guardians. They take it upon themselves to repel any predators that encroach upon their territory, using forceful kicks and bites to drive them away. It is recommended to use geldings (castrated males) or females as livestock guardians, as intact males can display undesirable levels of aggression.

Donkeys have been known to confront and even kill predators such as foxes, coyotes, wolves, and occasionally even hyenas.

In contrast to horses, which tend to flee when confronted by predators, donkeys assess the threat and may choose to approach it while loudly vocalizing their disapproval, as if saying, “Get off my land, you rascal!”
