To effectively manage a snake bite, it is crucial to follow the appropriate guidelines. Contrary to popular belief, you should not elevate the bitten area. Instead, keep it below the level of your heart and remain as calm as possible. If feasible, try to be carried rather than walking, as minimizing physical exertion helps in reducing heart rate.
It is highly beneficial to have knowledge about the snake species in your vicinity or the area you are traveling through. If possible, attempt to identify the snake without getting too close or risking another bite. Take a photo if it can be done safely. However, do not attempt to catch or kill the snake.
Identifying the snake will provide valuable information on how to handle the bite, and it will assist medical professionals in administering the appropriate antivenom, if necessary.
In the case of viper bites (such as rattlesnakes, cottonmouths, copperheads, adders, and various viper species), cover the bite with a loose bandage. If the bite occurs through clothing, remove the clothing over the affected area, especially shoes if bitten on the foot.
Viper venom is hemotoxic and causes significant tissue damage, leading to severe pain and swelling. Avoid anything that could constrict the area and impede swelling, as it may increase the risk of compartment syndrome. Allowing the venom to spread a bit is preferable, as concentrated venom in one area can result in the loss of a limb or digit.
For elapid bites (such as cobras, coral snakes, sea snakes, etc.), the treatment approach is different. Apply a pressure bandage directly over the bite to confine the venom to the bite area, preventing its spread.
Elapid venom is neurotoxic and can cause paralysis and muscle cramps, potentially affecting the ability to breathe. If you are caring for someone bitten by an elapid, be prepared to provide assistance with breathing if necessary.
Certain snakes have mixed venom (e.g., mojave green rattlesnakes, many Australian snakes), which pose additional challenges. The first aid response may depend on proximity to medical help. Using a pressure bandage could potentially lead to limb loss but save a life in certain situations.
It is essential to familiarize yourself with any unique venom types found in specific snakes (e.g., boomslangs). Research the region you are in or planning to visit to understand how to handle bites from such species.
Never use a tourniquet, venom extractors, or attempt to suck out the venom from a snake bite. Stay calm and seek immediate medical attention without delay.
Keep in mind that venomous snakes often deliver dry bites, withholding their venom if possible to conserve it for prey or other necessary uses. Do not wait for symptoms to manifest before seeking medical evaluation. Let the hospital determine the severity of the bite and provide appropriate care.
