I think Paul Simon and others similar might be a better example, but that said, South Africans have always blended a lot more in everyday life than many might think. Many communities were multilingual, most people raised even slightly outside the cities were conversant is an average of 3 languages – and children/teenagers relied on slang combing 2 or 3 regional languages to communicate. Clegg was from the later part of the regime era. Petty laws stopped being enforced in many areas long before they were ended in law courts.
Assimilation or blending of cultures will happen when they are brought together. I think intention matters.
