Let me share the story of Danish Rehman, a victim who suffered a severe lung infection that ultimately required a lung transplant.

The culprit behind this tragedy? The Indian Rock Pigeon, whose population has surged due to activities like the one depicted below.

Now, let’s address the question: “How do these pigeons threaten humans and cause damage to our lungs?”

These birds are a major source of Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis [3], a lung disease that occurs from prolonged exposure to allergens, leading to lung tissue thickening.

This condition poses a significant threat, leaving patients breathless even after taking a few steps. In advanced stages, the lungs lose their normal functionality.

One significant source of allergens that causes the aforementioned disease is the droppings and feathers of Indian Rock Pigeons.

These pigeons build nests on air conditioners, windows, and other areas where they defecate, engage in self-cleaning, and perform their daily activities. As a result, the dried droplet dust falls into air conditioning units or onto window bars. When carried by air, these particles can enter your lungs, making you ill.

Regarding ecological impact, Indian Rock Pigeons have become highly invasive in India with a large population. Thus, eliminating them will not adversely affect the ecology or other species.
