Foxes can emit chilling and high-pitched screams that may resemble someone in distress or being attacked. When I first heard it, it startled me greatly, especially since it often occurs during the silent hours of the night when most people are asleep. If the screaming persists, I occasionally open my window to shoo them away, and they quickly retreat. Living in an area with many foxes, it’s not uncommon to hear these screeches quite frequently, sometimes giving the impression that a notorious figure like Jack the Ripper is present.

Foxes scream for various reasons, primarily as a territorial warning to deter intruding foxes or during fights between themselves. Their loud screams serve to alert their clan members about the presence of an unfamiliar fox attempting to enter their territory, prompting the others to rush and assist in driving away the intruder. Additionally, foxes screech as a means of communication among each other, with the sound resembling human-like cries.

Female foxes scream to attract potential mates and also during and after mating. They may also emit screams when frightened or startled.
