    Crocodiles.

Many predators are often misunderstood or possess more complexity than we give them credit for.

Great whites were unfairly portrayed in Jaws. Sharks, in general, are mostly predictable and rarely pose a threat to humans.

Wolves? The chances of encountering one, let alone being attacked, are extremely low.

Snakes? They are usually conflict-averse and prefer to slither away if provided an escape route. Most snakebites occur when people attempt to harm or kill them.

Orcas? These massive, powerful creatures are incredibly intelligent. However, only a few human deaths have been caused by captive individuals (mostly by a single male), and there are no recorded fatalities in the wild. They have no interest in consuming us, which is more forgiving than our treatment of them.

Even polar bears, known for being “the only animal that hunts humans” (which is not entirely accurate), rarely view us as prey. Attacks are most common among malnourished males.

But crocs? Their predatory nature is not misunderstood. They are prehistoric death machines that have thrived virtually unchanged for hundreds of millions of years.

There is no mercy in those cold reptilian eyes. They are merely assessing you, silently and unnoticed.

They are not picky either—if you fit into those jaws, you are fair game.

Yes, they do exhibit care for their offspring. (However, they are more than willing to consume the offspring of other crocs, or even other crocs themselves.) But their softer side does not extend to Homo sapiens.

Polar bears being the only animals hunting humans? That notion is cute. Polar bears claimed the lives of 20 people between 1870 and 2014. Gustave the crocodile, on the other hand, is said to have killed 300.

Man-eating tigers or leopards are often old or injured, unable to hunt their usual prey. Man-eating crocs encompass any crocs large enough to consider you a meal.

When humans confront big cats, they arrive armed with sticks and guns seeking revenge. However, when Gustave claims his latest victim, they simply say, “Well, Steve probably had it coming.” There is no stick large enough to deter him, and he has already shrugged off several bullets.

Crocodiles may not possess the intelligence of an orca, but they are far from stupid. They are perfectly adapted as ambush predators, conserving energy and patiently waiting for the opportune moment to strike.

Crocodiles remember where humans frequent the riverside and patiently lie in wait.

    And wait.

They claim over 1,000 lives each year, likely underreported as many attacks occur in rural riverside settlements.

One moment, you’re dipping your toes in the river, and the next, you’re being dragged under by a modern-day dinosaur.

    Do not mess with crocs.
