The variety of wildlife you encounter in Africa depends on the specific location you visit, as the continent is vast and comprises numerous ecosystems. I’d like to share my experiences from Namibia’s Etosha National Park, which left a lasting impression on me.

The term “Big Five” was historically coined by European colonialists within the past 500 years to describe the most challenging animals to hunt on foot. This group includes the African Leopard, African Lion, African Buffalo, Black Rhino, and Bush Elephant, listed in ascending order of size.

During my visit to southern Africa, I had the opportunity to explore Namibia’s Etosha National Park. This captivating country offers a diverse range of landscapes, and Etosha is known for its dry savannah ecosystem. It shares a border with South Africa, which boasts the renowned Kruger National Park. However, the ecosystems in these two parks differ significantly, with Kruger featuring a combination of steppe-like grasslands and temperate climates.

Allow me to share some highlights of the large animals or “Big Five” that I encountered, with a focus on Etosha and a few tips about Kruger:

    1. MID-to-LARGE BIRDS

Ostriches, adapted to thrive in dry savannah-like conditions, are more commonly visible in Etosha. It’s worth noting that while they may not be friendly in the wild, they are also farmed.

Secretary Birds, known for their distinct appearance, may be spotted in Etosha, particularly around the few trees within the park where they build their nests.

    1. MID-SIZED CARNIVORES

Leopards exist in both parks but are incredibly elusive, making them extremely challenging to spot.

Cheetahs, preferring the savannahs of Etosha, require venturing deeper into the park for a chance encounter.

Jackals and their relatives occasionally approach human settlements, but it is advisable to keep a safe distance, as some of them can carry rabies.

    III. MID-SIZED HERBIVORES

Impalas, Kudus, Antelopes, and Wildebeest are relatively common but tend to be skittish. These species are also farmed.

Zebras, on the other hand, are more comfortable around safari jeeps, making them easier to observe.

    1. LARGE CARNIVORES

Lions are more active during the early morning hours and can be observed by venturing deeper into Etosha.

Crocodiles are primarily found in the river systems of Kruger and are not visible in the drier landscapes of Etosha.

    1. LARGE-to-GIANT HERBIVORES

Hippos, known for their affinity to river systems, are absent in and around Etosha.

Giraffes are relatively common in Etosha and can be considered part of the “Big Five” in this park.

Rhinos, specifically Black Rhinos, are elusive in Etosha. However, I was fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of a mother and her baby at a watering hole during the night.

Elephants are not as abundant in Etosha, but staying for 2-4 days increases your chances of encountering at least one of these majestic creatures.

I have shared a selection of photographs, some of which are not mine, to give you an idea of what you might experience in Namibia’s Etosha National Park. To capture high-quality pictures and videos, a high-resolution camera with zoom capabilities would be beneficial. It’s important to remember that spotting some of these animals also requires a bit of luck.

Based on my experiences in this dry savannah environment, the “Big Five” to look out for in Etosha are the Lion, Zebra, Giraffe, Black Rhino, and African Bush Elephant.
