In Brazil, there exists a fascinating creature known as the bush dog, which often goes unnoticed by many people.

This species possesses unique and exotic characteristics, setting it apart from others. Notably, it is the sole canid in the world with semi-aquatic habits, adapted for hunting capybaras and pacas.

Weighing between 6 and 9 kg, the bush dog is relatively small, with short legs and an elongated body.

Their social behavior is remarkably cohesive, as they engage in every activity together. They sleep side by side and make collective decisions before venturing out. Their complex and well-organized society exemplifies their unity.

Being exclusively carnivorous, they prey on various animals such as pacas, agoutis, capybaras, birds, mice, peccaries, deer, and even tapirs. There are records of a group of six bush dogs successfully hunting and killing a 226.5 kg tapir. Their hunting strategy involves wearing down the opponent and persistently biting until it succumbs.

Bush dogs are active during the day and inhabit a significant portion of the country. Their ability to remain elusive and evade human detection contributes to their survival, despite being hunted without apparent reason.

Apart from humans, the jaguar and cougar are the only known predators of the bush dog. However, when in large groups, these small creatures can retaliate against attacks.
