    Avoid toy breeds altogether.

These small dogs have delicate bones that can easily be injured, as illustrated by a tragic incident where a Yorkie was fatally injured when a child accidentally tripped and fell on it. Such incidents can traumatize both the child and the family. It’s crucial to choose a dog that can withstand accidental mishaps.

Similarly, certain breeds like Dalmatians and Huskies have faced challenges due to their portrayal in movies and TV shows. People are often drawn to the cute spotted puppies from Disney movies or the majestic Huskies from Game of Thrones. However, these dogs grow up to be high-energy breeds that require extensive exercise. Without sufficient physical activity, they can become destructive and wreak havoc on your home. Dalmatians, in particular, were originally bred as “coach dogs” to run alongside horse-drawn carriages, which demonstrates their exceptional energy levels.

Unfortunately, many people are unaware of these breed characteristics, and shelters often see a surge in Dalmatians and Huskies being surrendered or abandoned once they reach adulthood. Unless you are committed to running or biking daily, I do not recommend Dalmatians or Huskies.

Considering the presence of small children, it would be more suitable to lean towards sporting breeds such as Retrievers, Pointers, Spaniels (excluding American Cocker Spaniels, which have suffered from excessive inbreeding due to popularity), and Hounds. These breeds are easily trainable, highly attuned to their families, and possess the right amount of energy for playful interactions with children without becoming overwhelming.
