Here are some of the most important lines to know in infrared spectroscopy:

    • O-H stretching: This is a strong band that occurs in the 3200-3600 cm-1 region and is characteristic of alcohols, carboxylic acids, and other compounds that contain hydroxyl groups.
    • C-H stretching: This is a strong band that occurs in the 2800-3000 cm-1 region and is characteristic of compounds that contain hydrogen bonded to carbon, such as alkanes, alkenes, and alkynes.
    • C=O stretching: This is a strong band that occurs in the 1600-1800 cm-1 region and is characteristic of carbonyl compounds, such as aldehydes, ketones, and carboxylic acids.
    • N-H stretching: This is a medium-strong band that occurs in the 3300-3500 cm-1 region and is characteristic of compounds that contain nitrogen bonded to hydrogen, such as amines and amides.
    • C-C stretching: This is a weak band that occurs in the 1000-1200 cm-1 region and is characteristic of compounds that contain carbon bonded to carbon, such as alkanes, alkenes, and alkynes.

These are just a few of the most important lines to know in infrared spectroscopy. There are many other bands that can be used to identify different functional groups in molecules. By understanding the different types of vibrations that can occur in molecules and the corresponding absorption bands, it is possible to use infrared spectroscopy to identify the presence of specific functional groups in a sample.

Here are some additional tips for interpreting infrared spectra:

    • The intensity of an absorption band is related to the concentration of the absorbing species.
    • The width of an absorption band is related to the flexibility of the bond that is vibrating.
    • The position of an absorption band is related to the strength of the bond that is vibrating.

By understanding these factors, it is possible to gain a great deal of information about the structure of a molecule from its infrared spectrum.
