Observe their body language to decipher their relationship. In my case, my cat doesn’t particularly enjoy the company of dogs, so he tolerates his canine housemates. Occasionally, he engages in brief play sessions, but being 13 years old, that’s about the extent of his activity. The puppy can drive him crazy, so he allows her presence as long as she remains calm. However, when she becomes overly playful, his tail switches from a relaxed sway to an agitated swish, indicating that he’s in “you’re going to get it, baby sis” mode. He’s fully armed with his claws and won’t hesitate to use them if necessary. I understand that Buckeye will never be a fan of dogs, so I respect his boundaries. He has designated areas exclusively for cats, as it’s only fair. By observing their behavior when they’re in the same room, you’ll be able to discern their relationship. If the cat consistently leaves the room whenever Fido enters, it’s evident they’re not buddies. On the other hand, if you find them sharing the same bed, playing with a ball together, or simply hanging out, it’s a clear indication that they have become friends rather than mere housemates.
