1.The story starts and ends with the similar scene.
In the initial sequence Sivagami Devi takes a ritual walk with the firepot in her head, and finally Amarendra kills the look alike Asura, with a fire-headed javelin.
In the final sequence, Devasena takes the same ritual and in the end burns Balla who is the real life Asura.
(which is evident from several references to Lord Shiva in the court and calling himself Shivu when he is in disguise)

This idea felt unique to me because, I have heard that in general in the ages of Kings, there existed the Saivaites and Vaishnavites, and they do not marry outside their division. Thus it embraced the two major sects in Hinduism.
