In today’s equestrian world, it is estimated that around 95% of horse owners and riders rely on the expertise of a professional farrier. This is a crucial task that requires careful execution to avoid over-trimming and causing discomfort or harm to the horse. Additionally, the physical demands of trimming all four feet can be quite strenuous. Even well-trained horses can become impatient and resistant when it comes to holding their feet up for extended periods.
However, in my father’s time, things were different. Being a westerner in the United States and growing up in a family of horsemen and women, my father possessed the skills to train horses and apply horseshoes himself. His mother, my grandmother, had the knowledge and ability to harness a team of horses to a wagon, showcasing the deep-rooted horsemanship within our family.
Nowadays, many farriers undergo formal education and training to acquire a comprehensive understanding of the various techniques and tricks involved in their craft. These modern farriers receive specialized instruction to ensure they possess the necessary skills and knowledge to provide quality hoof care for horses.
